Robert Browning is one of my favorite poets, and perhaps the most pleasurable to read aloud. Return with him now to Italy in the year 1698, for the true story of a murder and a trial — The Ring and the Book.

It’s a must-read, people.  Browning had a remarkable gift for tone: one moment a chatty blogger, then scaling the poetic heights. A sensational story drawn from real life is just his bag.
